Dr. Michael Potente is an independent research group leader at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Heart and Lung Research (www.angio-met-lab.com). He is a trained cardiologist who combines basic cardiovascular research and clinical practice. Dr. Potente was educated as an MD at the Universities of Frankfurt and Toronto. After obtaining his doctoral degree with distinction, he joined the Department of Cardiology at the University of Frankfurt, as it offered the possibility to combine clinical with postdoctoral training in the associated Institute of Cardiovascular Regeneration. Michael Potente received his board certification in Internal Medicine and Cardiology in 2011 and was appointed as a senior physician in the same year. In 2012, he became a Max Planck Research Group Leader at the MPI in Bad Nauheim, where he set up his independent laboratory. His research is supported by national and international funding organizations such as the Max Planck Society, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), and the European Research Council (ERC). He has received national and international awards for his scientific work including the Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz Basic Research Prize from the American Heart Association as well as the Albert Fraenkel Prize granted by the German Cardiac Society. In 2014, he was selected for the renowned Young Investigator Programme of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). Recently, he was also awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant. His current work focuses on metabolic adaptations in endothelial cells, aiming to understand how changes in metabolism impact vascular differentiation and function.
